Backwards Shift: Xbox 360 Compatibility On The Xbox One

Though it comes as a retraction from Microsoft stating that this just wouldn’t happen, Xbox One owners are finally able to add their 360 titles to their current Xbox One library. Though many gamers state that backwards compatibility is a luxury that current gen console owners are not entitled to, but just as Sony has done with the PS2, PS3 and now the PS4, Microsoft cannot ignore the chance to add some of it’s critically acclaimed titles from the Xbox 360 library to it’s new systems small but fledging library. Though the selection is not as robust as most hoped, it is a good showing to begin with and the list of games will only grow with time.

Arriving with the Windows 10-powered New Xbox One Experience, the backwards compatibility is being handled in a similar fashion to how Microsoft handled adding Original Xbox titles to the Xbox 360, relying on updates to a software emulator to boot the original discs directly from the system , and until 2010 even play them online. The primary difference here is with the Xbox One, gamers will be prompted to install the game to the systems hard drive after inserting a disc. While this is a bit cumbersome for those who have managed to fill up their hard drives (which is surprisingly easy to do), it is still a desirable alternative to hanging onto the older console. One benefit is that the system does not need to be connected to the internet to enjoy 360 titles.

The primary quip many have with the new service is the selection of titles. Bear in mind, the systems backwards compatibility will not be as liberal as the PS3, which played all PS1 titles out of the box and certain models were able to handle PS2 emulation seamlessly. The Xbox One currently only works with 104 titles. While the current list of games includes hits such as Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Mass Effect, the list also included some mediocre and lacking titles such as Sacred Citadel a game that was panned across the board in reviews. It makes you wonder what process Microsoft uses to select their games, as the Xbox 360 was also compatible with original Xbox games that were commercially panned and forgettable.
