It now finally seems that both EA and DICE have listened to the most common gripe players have had with Star Wars Battlefront: the utter lack of single-player modes. As egregious as this seems, you cant really blame DICE for making single-player an afterthought. The game was advertised as a title for us to live out our Star Wars battle fantasies, and it does exactly that with tons of players online to share in the experience with. Given that the objective has been met, the need for a single campaign will obviously take a back seat. Though, it seems that EA is committed to making sure players get their Star Wars-worth with their purchase of the game, and has revealed that something will be done.
Don’t get too excited, as we are not going to see any type of single player campaign mode added to this game, as incredible as that could be. Instead, what we will be getting is more online modes brought into the single player mission mode. When asked about the progress of this addition EA’s customer support replied “The developers are working on it and they have progressed quite a bit.” A time frame could not be given, but most likely will arrive with the next DLC release.
Though it will not be the single player campaign gamers have been dreaming for since the heyday of Republic Commando on the PC and original Xbox, Star Wars Battlefront desperately needs more of a single player attraction in order to maintain interest. As fun as the game is and given how well it caters to the avid Star Wars fan, it is sorely lacking in content. With multiple locations spread out around only a small handful of planets, the game feels small despite the large sense of scale during gameplay. Also, considering out the previous Battlefront games included content from all six original movies in the franchise, it is a head-scratcher as to why DICE did not incorporate more content into the game. It is assumed that this will be part of DLC, but should have been part of the original release as done before.
Despite this glaring flaw in the game, Star Wars Battlefront remains one of the best games of 2015 and is currently the multiplayer shooter king of the hill.
