Just like other established military shooter franchises, Battlefield has always been advancing through the decades of war we have endured in modern times. With fresh beginnings in the nearly-defunct WW2 genre, shifting to the sparsely used Vietnam, then settling on the tried and true formula of modern day combat, Battlefield has kept up and has been at the forefront of shooter trends. In a deviation of form, it looks as if their next game will be set in World War I. Given that WWI-based games are very uncommon and typically not very good, this is exciting news for the series and for the FPS genre in general.
The news broke when German game retailer World of Games listed the upcoming shooter on the upcoming games list. It was listed as “Mehrspieler Taktik Shooter im 1. Weltkrieg“, which translates to “multiplayer tactical shooter in WW1” . The retailer has changed the classification to a more generic one, but not before a screenshot was taken, which has been making rounds around the internet all weekend. Though this is far from official confirmation, it has definitely drummed up a lot of anticipation for the new title.
Despite the waves of games that use wars such as WW2 and Vietnam as subject matter, World War 1 is very underrepresented. On the PC, the NecroVision titles offer a WW1 experience, but both titles in the series are quite lackluster and are very derivative. As far as a realistic WW1 simulation built with even a semi-modern engine, there is absolutely nothing of note that has been released. Given DICE’s track record with making Battlefield the premier team-based shooter for both PCs and consoles, we can only expect an top-shelf game that will deliver on providing a true-to-life WW1 experience both for those who have been clamoring for it and those who wish to try something different from the typical modern warfare shooters of today.
